Approximately 1 million women and young girls are suffering from obstetric fistulas worldwide. This condition occurs during childbirth when labor is prolonged or obstructed, and can be easily fixed with access to proper medical care. In Niger, less than 20 percent of these women will receive medical treatment causing them to be neglected and cast out from society. Some women travel several miles to seek treatment only to be turned down due to a lack of resources. The Worldwide Fistula Fund has opened medical centers and training programs throughout Africa to solve this problem.
